A Raleigh background check can mean a certified Wake County name search, an uncertified courthouse search or a fingerprint-based North Carolina history. Raleigh’s municipal records service directs court-related records to the Wake County Clerk of Court. Living or working in Raleigh does not show that every relevant event occurred in Wake County. Ask the recipient which counties, record type and certification it requires before choosing a product.
Request the single-county certified criminal search through the Clerk of Superior Court using AOC-CR-314. The Judicial Branch lists a $25 fee. Mail payment by money order or certified check; personal checks are not accepted. In person, the listed choices are credit card, cash, money order or certified check. This searches the named county, even if you need it for an application elsewhere.
Use the current form linked from the Judicial Branch’s Criminal Record Search page. Supply the requested names, including known former or alias names, the county and requested record categories; complete the requester information and signature. The form warns that the index is name-based, so a same-name result may belong to another person. A no-record result may miss an unprovided name or a record that is not disclosable.
Wake County’s dedicated line for record checks, expungements and disposed driver-license cases is 919-792-4325; the main clerk number is 919-792-4000. Use the records-check line to confirm the correct counter or mailing instructions, return delivery and any deadline before submitting. A filing or hearing appointment is not automatically a records-service appointment. Keep a copy of the form and proof of payment.
Public-access computers in a courthouse clerk’s office allow free criminal-record searching, viewing or emailing for a county or statewide. The result is uncertified, and paper printing may cost extra. The Judicial Branch expressly directs background-check users to the county clerk’s office rather than Portal. Portal can locate case information online, but that does not turn its result into the certified background product requested by an employer or other recipient.
SBI’s North Carolina-only fingerprint-based Right to Review costs $14 and provides a response on SBI letterhead. Follow the Personal Review page’s linked request instructions for the form, fingerprint card and payment. The Judicial Branch describes this as a non-certified statewide personal search. It is separate from the FBI national Identity History Summary and from an employer or licensing check requiring specific statutory authority.
Before arranging fingerprints or mailing a request, check the SBI background-check page’s current processing notice. It reports the request-receipt date being processed rather than guaranteeing a fixed number of days for every applicant. For status help, email [email protected] or call 919-582-8660. Keep the date sent and the identifying request reference so the office can trace the correct submission.
For a known case, obtain the disposition or later order from the clerk in the county where it was filed. On AOC-CR-314, an offense charged and an offense of conviction are different fields, and the form includes a code guide. Do not convert a charge, dismissal or same-name match into a conviction claim. Give the relevant clerk the case number and documentary discrepancy when seeking a court-record correction.
If a commercial employment report contains the error, dispute the item with that reporting company and supply copies of supporting court documents. The FTC says applicants must receive a report copy and a summary of FCRA rights before an employer takes a negative employment action based on that report. Ask for the company’s corrected report to be sent to the employer; fixing a court record alone may not update a previously sold report.
Before submitting your result, compare its county or state scope, names searched, search date and certification with the recipient’s instructions. Retain all pages and any clerk seal or accompanying letter. If the recipient asked for a certified Wake County search, a personal SBI response or an online commercial summary may fail that requirement despite containing useful information. No single Raleigh request automatically checks every jurisdiction in which a person has lived.
